Mick Jagger
Rock Singer — born 1943
Mick Jagger is an illustrious musician, songwriter, singer, actor and the founding member of ‘The Rolling Stones’.
Mick Jagger is an English musician, singer, and songwriter whose six-decade music career — primarily as the lead singer and co-founder of English rock band The Rolling Stones — has produced one of the foundational bodies of work in 20th and 21st-century international rock music. He was born Sir Michael Philip Jagger on July 26, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England. His father Basil Fanshawe Jagger was a physical-education teacher and his mother Eva Ensley Mary Scutts was a homemaker. His brother Chris Jagger is also a musician.
His education at the London School of Economics (1961–1963; without earning a degree) was followed by his early-career founding of The Rolling Stones in April 1962 with childhood friend Keith Richards (whom he had reconnected with on the Dartford railway-station platform in October 1961, after recognizing Richards's collection of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records). The June 7, 1963 first Rolling Stones single "Come On" — a cover of the Chuck Berry song — launched his career.
The 1965 single "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" — co-written with Keith Richards — became the band's first US Billboard Hot 100 number-one single in July 1965. The Rolling Stones' subsequent 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s commercial peak across multiple foundational rock albums — particularly Beggars Banquet (1968), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile on Main St. (1972), Some Girls (1978), and Tattoo You (1981) — produced one of the foundational bodies of 20th-century international rock music.
The December 6, 1969 Altamont Free Concert at the Altamont Speedway in California — which produced the killing of 18-year-old Meredith Hunter by Hells Angels security — has been continuously cited as the symbolic conclusion of the 1960s American counterculture. The Rolling Stones' 60-year continuous touring-and-recording career has continued through 2023's Hackney Diamonds album. Jagger was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in December 2003. He has had eight children with five women, and has been with American ballerina Melanie Hamrick since 2014.
His name Mick is the English diminutive of Michael (from the Hebrew Mikha'el meaning "who is like God?"). Mick has been a popular English and American boys' name through the mid-to-late 20th century.
