Morgan Tsvangirai

Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (1952–2018) was a Zimbabwean trade-union leader and politician who founded the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999 and served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2013 in a power-sharing government with Robert Mugabe. He stood for election against Mugabe three times and survived multiple arrests and beatings.

Born in Buhera district to a bricklayer father, the eldest of nine children, Tsvangirai left school at sixteen and worked in textile and nickel-mining industries before rising through the Associated Mine Workers' Union. Elected secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in 1988, he turned the federation into the principal organized opposition to ZANU-PF rule during the economic collapse of the late 1990s.

The MDC he co-founded won 57 of 120 contested seats in the 2000 parliamentary election. In the disputed 2008 presidential vote he received more votes than Mugabe in the first round but withdrew before the run-off, citing systematic violence against his supporters. South African and SADC mediation produced the Global Political Agreement under which he became Prime Minister in February 2009.

His four years in office stabilized the Zimbabwean dollar through dollarization, restored basic services, and reopened schools and hospitals, though Mugabe retained control of security ministries. He lost the 2013 presidential election to Mugabe in a vote his party rejected as fraudulent, and he died of colon cancer in Johannesburg in February 2018.

The name Morgan is of Welsh origin, from mor (sea) and cant (circle, edge) or gen (born), traditionally read as "sea-born" or "sea-circle" and used in Wales since at least the seventh century. He answered the older meaning in landlocked terms: a miner's son who circled the same opponent for two decades and refused to be moved off the shore.
