Muhammad Ahmad

Muhammad Ahmad was a Sudanese religious leader, who claimed to be deliverer of evil, the ‘Mahdi’, and led a successful ‘jihad’ movement.

Muhammad Ahmad ibn Abd Allah was a Sudanese religious leader who in 1881 declared himself the Mahdi, the divinely guided redeemer foretold in Islamic tradition, and led an uprising that drove the Ottoman-Egyptian administration out of most of present-day Sudan. Born around 1844 on Labab Island in the Nile near Dongola to a family of boat-builders who claimed descent from the Prophet, he was educated as a Sufi of the Sammaniyya order and acquired a reputation for strict piety and rhetorical force.

By the late 1870s he had settled on Aba Island on the White Nile, where he attracted a growing circle of disciples called Ansar, or helpers. In June 1881 he proclaimed his Mahdiship to a small group on the island, then withdrew westwards to the Nuba Mountains to gather support among Baqqara tribesmen and pastoralists alienated by Egyptian taxation.

His forces routed successive Egyptian columns, captured the provincial capital El Obeid in 1883 after a long siege, and annihilated the British-led expedition under William Hicks at Sheikan that November. The British government in Cairo dispatched Major-General Charles Gordon to evacuate Khartoum, but the Mahdists laid siege to the city and on 26 January 1885 stormed the palace and killed Gordon, two days before a relief column arrived.

Muhammad Ahmad died of typhus six months later at Omdurman, leaving his successor the Khalifa Abdullahi to rule the Mahdist state until its destruction by Lord Kitchener at Omdurman in 1898.
