Norm MacDonald

Norm MacDonald is a stand-up comedian best known for his performance on ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Norm Macdonald was a Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, and actor best known for anchoring the Weekend Update segment on NBC's Saturday Night Live from 1994 to 1998. His dry delivery, taste for long shaggy-dog setups, and willingness to repeat the same punchline until it broke became a defining style of late-twentieth-century North American comedy.

Born in Quebec City in 1959 and raised in Ottawa, he began performing stand-up in Canadian clubs in the 1980s before moving to Los Angeles. He wrote for the sitcom Roseanne in the early 1990s, then joined the SNL cast, where his Update commentary on the O. J. Simpson trial became one of the most discussed running bits of the era and was widely cited as a factor in his later removal from the desk.

After leaving SNL he led the sitcom The Norm Show on ABC from 1999 to 2001 and the cult comedy film Dirty Work. He continued to release stand-up specials, including Me Doing Stand-Up and the Netflix special Hitler's Dog, Gossip & Trickery, and hosted long-form interview podcasts that highlighted his fondness for digression and one-liners with no payoff.

He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012 but kept the illness private for nearly a decade, continuing to tour and record. He died in September 2021. A posthumous Netflix special, Nothing Special, drawn from material he recorded alone at home before surgery, was released in 2022.

The forename Norm is a short form of Norman, from the Old French Normant, meaning "man of the north," originally applied to the Norse settlers of Normandy. It carries a plain everyday register in English Canada that suited his self-effacing comic persona and is now firmly attached to him for many of his fans.
