Patrice Lumumba
Patrice Lumumba was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo.
Patrice Émery Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the independent Republic of the Congo, taking office in June 1960 at the age of thirty-five. His tenure lasted only weeks before a political crisis, secessionist movements, and Belgian and American intelligence intervention forced him from power, and he was assassinated in January 1961 in the breakaway province of Katanga.
Born in 1925 in the village of Onalua in the then Belgian Congo, he worked as a postal clerk and a brewery sales agent in Stanleyville and Léopoldville while writing for nationalist publications. In 1958 he co-founded the Mouvement National Congolais, the first nationwide Congolese political party, and led its delegation to the Brussels Round Table that set the timetable for independence.
His independence-day speech on 30 June 1960, delivered in the presence of King Baudouin of Belgium, addressed colonial violence directly and is often cited as a turning point in postcolonial political rhetoric. Within days a mutiny in the army, the Katanga secession under Moïse Tshombe, and a breakdown in relations with President Joseph Kasa-Vubu had left the new government close to collapse.
He was deposed in a military coup led by Joseph Mobutu in September 1960, placed under house arrest, and later transferred to Katanga, where he was killed alongside two associates. A 2001 Belgian parliamentary commission concluded that Belgium bore moral responsibility for the killing, and in 2022 a single tooth, the only known physical remains, was returned to his family.
The forename Patrice is the French masculine form of the Latin Patricius, meaning a member of the Roman patrician class, the same root that produces Patrick in English. The French spelling reflects the language of administration and education in the colonial Congo, and his use of it remains the form preserved in monuments, street names, and biographies across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond.
