Pete Townshend

Guitarist — born 1945

Pete Townshend is an English rock musician, singer-songwriter and a multiple instrument player.

Pete Townshend is an English musician, songwriter, and author whose six-decade music career — primarily as the lead guitarist, principal songwriter, and co-founder of English rock band The Who — has produced one of the foundational bodies of work in late-1960s and 1970s English rock music. He was born Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend on May 19, 1945, in Chiswick, London, into a working-class English military-and-musical family. His father Cliff Townshend was a saxophonist with the Royal Air Force band The Squadronaires, and his mother Betty Dennis was a singer with sidney torch's Sidney Torch Orchestra during World War II.

His education at Acton County Grammar School (1956–1961) — where he met his future Who bandmates John Entwistle and Roger Daltrey — launched his early-career path. His 1961 founding of the early Who band (initially called The Detours) with Entwistle and Daltrey at Acton County Grammar School, and the band's subsequent 1964 lineup completion with drummer Keith Moon, produced his English rock-band breakthrough.

His 1965 first Who single "I Can't Explain" produced his English rock-music commercial breakthrough. The Who's 1965 first album My Generation — and its title-track single — established the band as one of the foundational documents of 1960s English rock music. His subsequent Who albums — particularly the 1969 rock opera Tommy, the 1971 album Who's Next (which produced the singles "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Behind Blue Eyes"), and the 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia — produced one of the foundational bodies of late-1960s and 1970s English rock music.

His career has been continuously complicated by his early-2000s research into Internet child-pornography networks (which he conducted by accessing pornographic websites with his credit card to research his planned book on Internet child-protection issues — leading to his 2003 cautioning by London's Operation Ore investigation, with no charges filed). His subsequent Who career has continued through The Who's 2006 album Endless Wire and 2019 album Who, alongside multiple Who reunion tours through 2024. He has been with American musician Rachel Fuller since 2002.

His name Pete is the English short form of Peter (from the Greek Petros meaning "rock"). Pete was a popular American boys' name through the early-to-mid-20th century.
