Pierce Brosnan
Movie Actor — born 1953
Pierce Brosnan is an actor most famous for his role in the ‘James Bond’ film franchise.
Pierce Brosnan is an Irish-American actor whose four-decade career has been most-defined by his eight-year tenure as British secret agent James Bond — playing 007 in four films from 1995 to 2002. He was born Pierce Brendan Brosnan on May 16, 1953, in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. His parents separated when he was an infant, and he was raised primarily by his maternal grandparents in Navan, County Meath. The family moved to London in 1964, when Pierce was 11, and he trained at the Drama Centre London.
His TV career through the late 1970s and early 1980s included British and American roles before his NBC TV series Remington Steele (1982–1987) — the comedy-drama in which he played the title role of a charming con-man-turned-private-detective opposite Stephanie Zimbalist's Laura Holt. The show ran for five seasons across 94 episodes and made Brosnan one of the most-recognizable American TV-detective figures of the 1980s.
His James Bond casting came in 1995 with Martin Campbell's GoldenEye. Brosnan had been originally offered the Bond role in 1986 (after Roger Moore's 1985 retirement), but NBC contractual obligations on Remington Steele forced him to decline. He was cast again nine years later, beginning the 1995–2002 Bond run that included GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). The four Brosnan Bond films collectively grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.
Beyond the Bond franchise, his major roles have included The Thomas Crown Affair (1999, opposite Rene Russo), The Tailor of Panama (2001, opposite Geoffrey Rush), Mamma Mia! (2008) and the 2018 sequel, the 2018 indie comedy The November Man, and the 2024 Apple TV+ comedy The Last Rifleman. He has been with American journalist-and-actress Keely Shaye Smith since 2001, and the couple has two children.
His name Pierce is from the Old French Piers, the medieval English form of Peter (from the Greek Petros meaning "rock"). Pierce has been continuously climbing in American naming since the 2010s.
