Ramy Ashour

Ramy Ashour is well-known professional squash player.

Ramy Ashour, born 1987 in Cairo, is an Egyptian professional squash player whose attacking, improvisational style made him one of the most admired figures of the sport in the early twenty-first century. He won the World Junior Squash Championship in 2004 and again in 2006, the only player to take that title twice, and turned professional shortly afterwards.

Ashour reached world number one in January 2010 and held the top ranking on several occasions through 2014. He won the men's World Open three times, in 2008, 2012, and 2014, and was a multiple winner of the British Open and the Tournament of Champions in New York. Between 2012 and 2014 he put together an unbeaten run of 49 consecutive professional matches, one of the longest in squash history.

He represented Egypt at the World Team Squash Championships, helping his country to the gold medal in 2009 and again in subsequent editions. His shot-making, often featuring deceptive backhand flicks and short-court winners, was widely studied by younger Egyptian players in the era that produced Mohamed ElShorbagy and Ali Farag.

A persistent hamstring injury limited Ashour's appearances after 2015 and led him to step back from full-time competition before formally retiring in 2019. He has since worked as a coach and commentator and is regarded as a central figure in the rise of Egyptian dominance in world squash.
