Rod Serling

Director — born 1924

Rod Serling was an American television producer, screenwriter, playwright and narrator.

Rod Serling was an American screenwriter, narrator, playwright, and TV producer whose 30-year career produced multiple foundational documents of late-1950s and 1960s American television — particularly his role as the creator, host, narrator, and primary writer of CBS's anthology series The Twilight Zone (1959–1964). He was born Rodman Edward Serling on December 25, 1924, in Syracuse, New York, into a Jewish-American family. His father Samuel Lawrence Serling was a butcher and grocer, and his mother Esther Cooper Serling was a homemaker. The family relocated to Binghamton, New York, when Rod was an infant.

His U.S. Army Airborne service across 1943–1945 — including his 1944–1945 service as a paratrooper with the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division across the Philippines, New Guinea, and Pacific Theater — produced his post-war PTSD and shaped his subsequent anti-war screenwriting. His education at Antioch College (B.A. in Literature, 1950) launched his early-career path.

His early-1950s freelance TV-screenwriting career — across multiple American TV anthology dramas including Kraft Television Theatre, Studio One, and Playhouse 90 — produced his commercial breakthrough. His 1955 Kraft Television Theatre teleplay Patterns won him the 1956 Emmy Award for Best Original Teleplay Writing — the first of his six Emmy Awards. His 1956 Playhouse 90 teleplay Requiem for a Heavyweight won him the 1957 Emmy Award for Best Teleplay Writing.

His October 2, 1959 launch of CBS's The Twilight Zone — for which he wrote 92 of the 156 episodes across the five-season run (1959–1964) — produced his American television public profile. His parallel film work produced screenplays for Franklin J. Schaffner's Planet of the Apes (1968, with Michael Wilson) and Sydney Pollack's Seven Days in May (1964). His 1970 launch of the syndicated horror-anthology TV series Night Gallery (1970–1973) produced his later TV public profile. He died on June 28, 1975, at age 50, in Rochester, New York, of complications following heart-bypass surgery.

His name Rod is the English short form of Rodney (from the Old English place-name meaning "Hroda's island"). Rod has been a popular American boys' name through the mid-20th century.
