Rodolfo Amoedo

Rodolfo Amoedo was a Brazilian history painter born in Salvador, Bahia.

Rodolfo Amoedo was a Brazilian academic painter who carried the late nineteenth-century French history-painting tradition home to Rio de Janeiro and shaped two generations of Brazilian artists through his teaching at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and its republican successor. He was born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1857.

He studied at the Imperial Academy in Rio, where his early prizes earned him a state travel scholarship to Europe in 1879. In Paris he trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, exhibiting at the Salon and absorbing the smooth historicist manner that ruled official French art before Impressionism's full rise.

His 1883 canvas The Last Tamoio, showing the dead body of an indigenous warrior tended by a Jesuit, won the Academy's gold medal in Rio and remains a central image of Brazilian academic painting. Other major works followed, including Marabá in 1882, the ceiling of the National Library, and the decorative cycle for the Pedro Ernesto Palace, the city council seat.

From 1888 he taught at the Academy and continued through its 1890 reorganisation as the National School of Fine Arts, training Eliseu Visconti, Helios Seelinger, and Henrique Bernardelli's students alongside his own circle. He served briefly as the school's director and pushed back against the modernist current that began arriving in the 1910s. He died in Rio in 1941, aged eighty-three.

The name Rodolfo is the Italian and Portuguese form of Rudolph, from the Old Germanic Hrodulf, combining hrod, meaning fame, with wulf, meaning wolf. He earned the first half quietly through six decades of teaching and finished as the senior figure his Brazilian republic took for granted as the face of academic painting.
