Sachin Tendulkar
Cricket Player — born 1973
Sachin Tendulkar is a former Indian cricketer considered to the greatest cricketer of all time.
Sachin Tendulkar is an Indian former international cricketer whose 24-year international cricket career across 1989–2013 produced one of the foundational bodies of work in late-20th and early-21st-century international cricket — particularly his record 100 international cricket centuries (the most of any cricketer in cricket history) and his 34,357 international cricket runs (the most of any cricketer in cricket history). He was born Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar on April 24, 1973, in Bombay, India (modern Mumbai), into an Indian Maharashtrian-Brahmin family. His father Ramesh Tendulkar was a Marathi novelist and his mother Rajni Tendulkar was an insurance-company official.
His breakthrough came at age 14 in 1987 — when he scored 326 runs out of his Mumbai Sharadashram Vidyamandir school team's 664 runs in their inter-school cricket match against St. Xavier's High School. The November 14, 1987 partnership of 664 runs (with Vinod Kambli — both batting unbeaten) was the highest unbeaten partnership in the history of cricket at any level until 2006.
His November 15, 1989 international Test cricket debut for India against Pakistan — at age 16 years and 205 days, in Karachi — launched his international cricket career. His December 1989 international One Day International (ODI) cricket debut against Pakistan in Gujranwala launched his ODI career. His career across the 1990s and 2000s produced his record 51 Test cricket centuries (the most of any Test cricketer in Test cricket history) and his record 49 ODI cricket centuries.
His 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup victory — his sixth ICC Cricket World Cup as a member of the Indian national cricket team, after participating in the 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup tournaments without a victory — produced his international cricket trophy collection. His November 14–16, 2013 final international Test cricket match against the West Indies in Mumbai concluded his 24-year international cricket career. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna (the highest civilian award of India) on November 16, 2013, the day after his international cricket retirement — the first sportsperson and youngest recipient ever to receive the award. He married Mumbai pediatrician Anjali Mehta in 1995, and the couple has two children.
His name Sachin derives from the Sanskrit Sachin meaning "truthful one" or "essence." Sachin has been climbing in American naming since the 2000s.
