Salvador Jorge Blanco

Salvador Jorge Blanco is a famous politician and writer who belonged to the Dominican Republic.

Salvador Jorge Blanco (July 5, 1926 – December 26, 2010) was a Dominican lawyer, writer, and politician who served as the 49th President of the Dominican Republic from 1982 to 1986. A leading figure of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, he was the first Dominican president to be tried and convicted on corruption charges after leaving office.

Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, he earned his law degree at the Universidad de Santo Domingo and built a practice that combined commercial cases with constitutional and human-rights litigation. During the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and the political turbulence that followed his 1961 assassination, Jorge Blanco aligned with the reformist current of Juan Bosch and joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party.

He served as a senator for the Distrito Nacional and as the party's general secretary before securing its presidential nomination. He defeated the ruling party's candidate in the 1982 election, taking office during a sharp economic crisis driven by falling sugar prices and heavy external debt. His government negotiated a structural-adjustment package with the International Monetary Fund; the resulting price increases triggered the deadly Poblada de Abril riots in April 1984.

After leaving office in 1986 he was charged with embezzlement and corruption tied to military procurement contracts. He fled briefly, returned to face trial, and was convicted in 1991, with the sentence later overturned and the case eventually dismissed in 2001 after long appeals. He continued to write on Dominican politics and constitutional law until his death in Santo Domingo in 2010.

The name Salvador comes from the Late Latin Salvator, meaning savior, a name long given by Spanish-speaking Catholic families. He carried it through one of the most contested presidencies in modern Dominican history.
