Satcha Pretto

Satcha Pretto is a Honduran-American journalist who has anchored the morning programme Despierta América on the Univision network for more than a decade, making her one of the most recognised Spanish-language news presenters in the United States. She was born on November 1, 1979 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The daughter of an architect father and a homemaker mother, she emigrated with her family to the United States as a teenager and settled in Florida. She graduated cum laude from Florida International University with a degree in broadcast journalism, gaining early newsroom experience as an intern and reporter at WLTV-DT, Univision's Miami flagship.

Pretto rose through local Univision affiliates in Phoenix and Miami, covering Hurricane Katrina, the migration of Central American minors at the U.S. southern border, and the political crisis in Venezuela. In 2010 she joined Despierta América as a contributor and was promoted to main anchor in 2014, replacing Ana María Canseco beside Karla Martínez.

She has interviewed Pope Francis, several Latin American heads of state, and most contestants on the network's flagship competition shows, and has been honoured with multiple Daytime Emmy Awards as part of the Despierta América team. She lives in Miami with her husband, attorney Aníbal Marrero, and their two children.

The name Satcha is an unusual Spanish coinage with possible Sanskrit roots in satya meaning "truth"; she is a woman whose given name, fittingly, points at the work of telling it.
