Shakira
Pop Singer — born 1977
Shakira is a highly popular award winning Columbian pop singer and dancer.
Shakira is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, and businesswoman whose three-decade music career has produced four Grammy Awards, 13 Latin Grammy Awards, and over 80 million records sold worldwide — making her the bestselling Colombian artist of all time. She was born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, into a Lebanese-Italian-Spanish-Colombian family. Her father William Mebarak Chadid was a Lebanese-Colombian American-immigrant jewelry-business operator, and her mother Nidia Ripoll Torrado was an Italian-Colombian homemaker.
Her teenage Colombian music career across 1990–1995 — across her two early commercial Sony Music Colombia albums Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993) — launched her early-1990s Colombian music public profile, although the early commercial-reception was modest at its early-1990s release.
Her 1995 third commercial album Pies Descalzos — released October 6, 1995 by Sony Music Latin — sold over five million copies worldwide and produced her mid-1990s Latin-American music public profile. Her 1998 fourth commercial album ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? — released September 29, 1998 by Sony Music Latin — sold over seven million copies worldwide and produced her late-1990s international Latin-American music commercial peak.
Her November 13, 2001 fifth commercial album Laundry Service (her first English-language album) — released by Epic Records — sold over 13 million copies worldwide and produced her international English-language music commercial breakthrough. The 2001 album produced her single "Whenever, Wherever" (which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100). Her subsequent 2005 album Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 sold over six million copies worldwide and produced her single "Hips Don't Lie" (with Wyclef Jean, which became her first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single).
Her June 11, 2010 commercial single "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" — the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa — sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Her parallel American TV-personality career has produced her 2013–2014 coaching position on the fourth and sixth seasons of NBC's singing-competition TV series The Voice. She was with Argentine attorney Antonio de la Rúa from 2000 to 2010, and with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué from 2011 to 2022. The Shakira-Piqué couple has two sons.
Her name Shakira derives from the Arabic Shākira meaning "thankful." Shakira has been climbing in American naming since the 2000s.
