Solon

Solon was an Athenian lawmaker, poet and politician.

Solon was an Athenian statesman, lawgiver, and poet of the early sixth century BC, traditionally counted among the Seven Sages of Greece. He was born around 630 BC into an aristocratic family in Athens that traced descent from the legendary king Codrus, and he died around 560 BC. He worked as a merchant in his early life and traveled widely, an experience that informed both his poetry and his later political reforms.

His political prominence began around 594 BC, when the Athenians elected him archon and gave him extraordinary powers to reform a city torn between debt-burdened farmers and a wealthy aristocracy. He responded with the seisachtheia, or "shaking off of burdens," which cancelled debts secured on the person, freed Athenians who had been enslaved for debt, and forbade the practice in the future. He also restructured Athenian society into four property classes and reorganized the assembly and courts.

His constitutional reforms laid groundwork that later Athenian democrats — including Cleisthenes and Pericles — built upon. He is said to have made the Athenians swear to keep his laws unchanged for ten years, then left the city to travel to Egypt, Cyprus, and possibly the court of Croesus in Lydia. The story of his meeting with Croesus, in which Solon told the rich king that no man can be called happy until he has died well, was preserved by Herodotus.

His surviving poetry — fragments of elegiac and iambic verse quoted by later authors — defended his reforms, attacked greed, and reflected on the limits of human happiness. Aristotle treated him as a foundational figure in the Constitution of the Athenians, and Plutarch wrote a full biography of him in the Parallel Lives. He remains one of the most-cited figures in the Western tradition of constitutional thought.

His name Solon is the Greek Sólōn, of uncertain origin but often connected to Greek roots associated with safety or wholeness. He gave the name a permanent place in Western political vocabulary — "a Solon" still means a wise legislator in English usage today.
