Stevie Ray Vaughan was an American guitarist, musician, singer and songwriter and the founding member of the band ‘Double Trouble’.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose six-year recording career produced one of the most-iconic American electric-blues-revival catalogs of the 1980s. He was born Stephen Ray Vaughan on October 3, 1954, in Dallas, Texas. He was the younger brother of guitarist Jimmie Vaughan (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds). He started playing guitar at age seven, dropped out of high school in 1971 at age 17, and moved to Austin, Texas in his late teens to pursue music full-time.
His career-launching break came in 1982 when his Austin-based band Double Trouble was invited to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The Montreux performance was witnessed by David Bowie (who hired Vaughan as the lead guitarist on his 1983 album Let's Dance) and Jackson Browne (who offered Double Trouble free studio time at his Los Angeles studio). The 1983 Bowie session and the subsequent Double Trouble debut album produced rapid 1983–1984 commercial breakthrough.
The 1983 debut album Texas Flood established Double Trouble as one of the American blues acts of the 1980s. Subsequent albums Couldn't Stand the Weather (1984), Soul to Soul (1985), and the 1986 live album Live Alive consolidated his reputation as the American electric-blues guitarist of the 1980s electric-blues-revival movement. The 1989 album In Step — recorded after his 1986 entry into substance-abuse treatment — won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Recording.
On the night of August 27, 1990, Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash near East Troy, Wisconsin. He was returning from a concert at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre — where he had performed alongside Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and his brother Jimmie Vaughan — when the helicopter struck a hill in dense fog. He was 35 years old. The 1991 posthumous album The Sky Is Crying won two 1992 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
