Terrell Owens
Football Player — born 1973
Terrell Owens is a former football player famous for both his explosive performances as well as controversies.
Terrell Owens is an American former professional football player whose 16-season NFL career produced one of the American wide-receiver careers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries — including 1,078 career receptions and 153 career receiving touchdowns. He was born Terrell Eldorado Owens on December 7, 1973, in Alexander City, Alabama. His father Larry Foster (a next-door neighbor) was only revealed to him as his biological father when Terrell was 11 — an family revelation that shaped his public persona.
He played college football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft. His 49ers career (1996–2003) produced two Pro Bowl selections and the 2000 single-game record of 20 receptions in a single NFL game (against the Chicago Bears). The 2000 receptions record has been continuously cited as one of the American football statistical records of the 21st century.
His Philadelphia Eagles career (2004–2005) produced the 2005 Super Bowl XXXIX appearance — at which Owens caught 9 receptions for 122 yards despite playing on a broken leg that he had re-broken six weeks before the Super Bowl. The 2005 Super Bowl performance has been continuously cited as one of the American sports-courage moments of the mid-2000s.
His career was complicated by his continuous public confrontations with teammates, coaches, and ownership across multiple NFL franchises. He played for Dallas Cowboys (2006–2008), Buffalo Bills (2009), and Cincinnati Bengals (2010) before retirement in 2011. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 — but he refused to attend the Canton, Ohio induction ceremony, instead delivering his acceptance speech at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. He has continued to be a recurring American football-cultural figure into his fifties.
His name Terrell is from the Old French surname meaning "stubborn" or "strong." Terrell has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for over half a century.
