Vanessa Paradis
Pop Singer — born 1972
Vanessa Paradis is a French singer, actress and model.
Vanessa Paradis is a French singer, actress, and model whose four-decade career has made her one of the most-iconic French popular-music and film-acting figures of her generation. She was born Vanessa Chantal Paradis on December 22, 1972, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France, into a French family of decorators. She started performing at age 7 on French TV variety shows and signed her first record deal at age 14.
Her career-launching single "Joe le taxi" (1987) — released when she was 14 — reached #1 on the French Singles Chart and stayed there for 11 weeks, becoming one of the bestselling singles in French music history at that time. The song's music video (Vanessa singing in the French streetscape with old taxicabs) made her one of the most-recognizable French teenage pop figures of the late 1980s.
Her subsequent French and English-language albums included M & J (1988), the 1992 self-titled album Vanessa Paradis (produced by Lenny Kravitz, who was her then-boyfriend, and which produced the English-language single "Be My Baby"), Bliss (2000), and Divinidylle (2007). The 1990 Karl Lagerfeld Chanel Coco perfume commercial — featuring Paradis as a hummingbird trapped in an gilded cage — made her one of the most-iconic French fashion-modeling faces of the early 1990s.
Her parallel film career has produced major French-language work: Élisa (1995, opposite Gérard Depardieu), Une chance sur deux (1998, opposite Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon), and the 2010 César Award-winning L'Arnacœur (English title Heartbreaker, where she played the French romantic lead opposite Romain Duris). She was with American actor Johnny Depp from 1998 to 2012, and the couple has two children — including model Lily-Rose Depp. She has been with French director Samuel Benchetrit since 2016.
Her name Vanessa is from the Greek Phaneros — invented by the Irish satirist Jonathan Swift in his 1726 poem Cadenus and Vanessa, where Vanessa is an anagram of Esther Vanhomrigh's surname. Vanessa has been continuously among the most-popular American girls' names for decades.
