William Morris

William Morris (1834–1896) was an English designer, poet, and socialist whose work defined the Arts and Crafts movement and reshaped attitudes toward decorative art across Britain, Europe, and North America. He insisted that everyday objects, from wallpaper and textiles to printed books, deserved the same artistic care as paintings, and he linked that conviction to a wider critique of industrial capitalism.

Born in Walthamstow, on the eastern edge of London, into a wealthy family, Morris studied at Exeter College, Oxford, where he met the painter Edward Burne-Jones and absorbed the medievalism of John Ruskin. Trained briefly as an architect, he turned to design after marrying Jane Burden in 1859 and commissioning Philip Webb to build the Red House in Bexleyheath, whose interiors he and his friends decorated by hand.

In 1861 he founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co., later known as Morris and Co., which produced furniture, stained glass, embroidery, tapestries, and the patterned wallpapers and printed fabrics for which he remains famous. Designs such as Strawberry Thief, Trellis, and Willow Bough are still in production. His Kelmscott Press, established in 1891, issued fine-printed books including the celebrated Kelmscott Chaucer.

A poet of long romances such as The Earthly Paradise and the Icelandic-inspired Sigurd the Volsung, he was also a committed socialist who helped found the Socialist League in 1884 and wrote the utopian novel News from Nowhere. He died in 1896 at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith.
