Winston Churchill

World Leader — born 1874

Winston Churchill was a British politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Winston Churchill was a British statesman and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice (May 1940 to July 1945, and October 1951 to April 1955) — leading Britain through World War II — and is one of the most-iconic British political figures of the 20th century. He was born Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill on November 30, 1874, at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, into the British Spencer-Churchill aristocratic family. His father Lord Randolph Churchill was a Conservative politician, and his mother Jennie Jerome was a New York heiress.

He attended Harrow School and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, then served as a British Army officer in India, Sudan, and South Africa through the late 1890s. He was elected to Parliament in 1900 at age 26 and held nearly continuous parliamentary office for the next 64 years. Through the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s he served in multiple senior cabinet positions including First Lord of the Admiralty (during which he oversaw the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of 1915), Secretary of State for War, and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

His moment came in May 1940 when he became Prime Minister at the moment of greatest German military success in World War II. His wartime speeches — "We shall fight on the beaches" (June 4, 1940), "This was their finest hour" (June 18, 1940), "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" (August 20, 1940) — shaped British wartime morale. The Allied victory in May 1945 was attributed to his wartime leadership.

Despite the Allied victory, his Conservative Party lost the July 1945 general election in a landslide to Clement Attlee's Labour Party. He returned as Prime Minister in 1951 at age 76 and served until his April 1955 retirement. He was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature for his historical and biographical writing — particularly the six-volume The Second World War (1948–1954). He died on January 24, 1965, at age 90, in London. His state funeral was the largest such ceremony in British history at that time.

His name Winston is from the Old English place-name meaning "Wine's homestead" (Wine being an Anglo-Saxon personal name). Winston has been continuously climbing in American naming since the 2010s vintage-revival wave.
