About the Name Mercedes
Mercedes is a Spanish name derived from the Marian title María de las Mercedes — "Mary of Mercies" — in which mercedes is the plural of merced, meaning "mercy" or "grace," from the Latin merces ("reward" or "price," later extended to mean "favor" and "clemency"). The feast of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes has been observed in the Catholic calendar since the seventeenth century, and the name spread through Spanish and Latin American Catholic communities as a form of Marian devotion. The name gained a second and very different layer of cultural association in the late nineteenth century when a German engineer named his automobile after his daughter Mercedes, a biographical coincidence that gave the name global recognition far beyond its religious origins and invested it with an additional connotation of elegance and precision that has coexisted alongside its devotional meaning ever since.
Mercedes appears in the US Social Security top-1000 from 2000 and reached its peak rank of #283 in 2001. It held mid-list presence through the 2000s before declining: #708 in 2012, #859 in 2013, and #986 in 2014, the last year it appeared in the top-1000. Over its tracked run, approximately 10,224 babies received the name in top-1000 years. The recorded variant is Mercy.
