Mia is a short, three-letter name that has functioned for centuries as a nickname or diminutive of Maria (the Hebrew Miryam, mother of Jesus) in Italian, Spanish, and Scandinavian traditions. In English-speaking countries Mia became a standalone name only in the late 20th century, partly through Italian-American transmission and partly through Scandinavian immigration, but it accelerated dramatically after the year 2000.
Mia is also the Italian and Spanish word for "mine" (feminine possessive), and its tonal warmth in everyday speech — "my own," "my dear" — gives the name an inherent intimacy that few other three-letter names match.
