Meaning and history of Mia
Mia is used as a short form of Maria in several European naming traditions. Maria in turn comes through Latin and Greek forms of the Hebrew name Miryam. That longer history should be kept distinct from a direct dictionary translation of Mia.
Mia also coincides with the Italian feminine possessive word meaning “mine.” This is a separate word association, not proof that all uses of the personal name were formed from that word. The former description as an abbreviation of Michal did not match the Maria-derived history documented in the cited references.
