Bob Dylan
Folk Singer — born 1941
Bob Dylan is an American singer who is a major figure in the western pop music scenario.
Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter whose work since the early 1960s has reshaped the boundaries of popular song and earned him the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up in the iron-mining town of Hibbing on the Mesabi Range, in a Jewish family of Lithuanian and Ukrainian descent. He briefly attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he played in folk clubs around Dinkytown and adopted the stage name Bob Dylan.
He moved to New York City in January 1961 and signed with Columbia Records that autumn after performing in Greenwich Village folk clubs and playing harmonica on Harry Belafonte and Carolyn Hester sessions.
His second album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) included "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall." He went electric at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965, and the trilogy of Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), and Blonde on Blonde (1966) reshaped American rock songwriting. The single "Like a Rolling Stone" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1965.
After a 1966 motorcycle accident in Woodstock he withdrew from touring for eight years, returning with the Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975 and the Christian-themed albums Slow Train Coming (1979) and Saved (1980). His Never Ending Tour began in 1988 and continued past 2024. Later studio albums Time Out of Mind (1997), Modern Times (2006), and Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020) returned him to the top of the U.S. album chart. He has won 10 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for "Things Have Changed" (2000), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2012), and the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
His given name Bob is a short form of Robert, from the Germanic Hrodebert meaning "bright fame." The pet form Bob became established in medieval England alongside Rob and Robin and remains one of the most common English short names.
