Bob Uecker

Baseball Player — born 1935

Bob Uecker is a talented sports personality and an actor.

Bob Uecker was an American baseball player and broadcaster who played six seasons in Major League Baseball as a backup catcher and then spent more than half a century calling Milwaukee Brewers games on the radio. He was born Robert George Uecker on January 26, 1934, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He signed with his hometown Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent in 1956 and made his major-league debut with the team in April 1962.

His playing career covered six seasons with the Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves. He retired in 1967 with a lifetime batting average of .200, 14 home runs, and a World Series ring from the 1964 Cardinals.

He turned the slimness of his playing record into the basis of a comic public persona. Beginning in 1971 he called Milwaukee Brewers games on radio, and he held the lead announcer's chair through the 2024 season — 54 seasons in all. From 1985 to 1989 he played pompous sportscaster Harry Doyle in the baseball comedy Major League and its two sequels, with the line "Juuust a bit outside" becoming one of the most-quoted lines in American sports comedy. He played George Owens on the ABC sitcom Mr. Belvedere from 1985 to 1990.

He appeared more than 100 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where his self-deprecating stories about his playing days helped define the talk-show baseball routine. He delivered a long-running series of Miller Lite beer advertisements built around the joke that he was sitting "in the front roooow" of the cheap seats. He was given the Ford C. Frick Award by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 for his broadcasting work. He died in Milwaukee on January 16, 2025, at age 90.

His given name Bob is a rhyming short form of Robert, from the Germanic Hrodebert meaning "bright fame." The pet form Bob developed in medieval England and has remained one of the most common English short names ever since.
