Jerry Springer

TV Show Host — born 1944

Jerry Springer is a former English-American Democratic mayor of Cincinnati, actor, news anchor, musician and best known for his talk show ‘The Jerry Springer Show’.

Jerry Springer was an English-American TV personality, lawyer, and former politician whose 27-year tenure as host of CBS-TV's syndicated The Jerry Springer Show (1991–2018) made him one of the most-iconic American daytime-TV figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was born Gerald Norman Springer on February 13, 1944, in Highgate, London, England, in an London Underground bomb shelter during a German V-1 flying bomb attack. His Polish-Jewish parents (Margot and Richard Springer) had escaped Nazi Germany in 1939 and would later move the family to New York City in 1949.

He earned Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Tulane University and Northwestern University respectively (1965, 1968). His political career began as a campaign aide to 1968 Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. He was elected to the Cincinnati city council in 1971 at age 26 and served as the Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978.

His TV career began in 1982 as a political commentator on Cincinnati's WLWT-TV. The 1991 launch of The Jerry Springer Show on NBC (later moved to syndication) — initially as a conventional issue-oriented talk show — gradually pivoted into one of the most-controversial American daytime-TV formats. The mid-1990s Springer Show pivot toward confrontational guest-on-guest physical altercations, outrageous personal-life confessions, and shouted audience reactions made the show one of the most-watched and most-controversial American daytime-TV programs of the late 1990s and 2000s.

The Springer Show ran for 27 seasons across 4,000+ episodes through 2018 — becoming one of the longest-running American daytime-talk-show series in TV history. His catchphrase "Take care of yourselves... and each other" became one of the American daytime-TV catchphrases of the era. He died on April 27, 2023, at age 79, at his Chicago suburban Evanston home, of pancreatic cancer.

His name Jerry is the English short form of Jerome, Jeremy, or Gerald. Jerry has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for decades.
