Joe Montana

Football Player — born 1956

Joe Montana is a former American professional football player famous for his record breaking career at NFL and Super Bowl.

Joe Montana is an American former professional football quarterback who played sixteen seasons in the National Football League. Born Joseph Clifford Montana Jr. on June 11, 1956, in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, he was raised in nearby Monongahela in the football-rich Mon Valley region.

Montana attended Ringgold High School and accepted a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he played quarterback for the Fighting Irish from 1975 to 1978. He led Notre Dame to a national championship in 1977 and to a comeback victory in the 1979 Cotton Bowl Classic against Houston.

The San Francisco 49ers selected him in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He took over as the starting quarterback in 1981 and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl XVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that season, the team's first NFL championship.

Montana led the 49ers to four Super Bowl wins (XVI, XIX, XXIII, and XXIV), winning Super Bowl Most Valuable Player three times and league MVP twice. He threw the winning touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left in Super Bowl XXIII against Cincinnati. After a 1991 elbow injury and Steve Young's emergence in San Francisco, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993 and led them to two playoff appearances before retiring in 1995. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

The name Joe is a short form of Joseph, from the Hebrew Yosef, meaning "he will add" or "may God add," from the verb yasaf (to add).
