Matt Dillon

Movie Actor — born 1964

Matt Dillon is a renowned American actor and film director.

Matt Dillon is an American actor whose four-decade career has produced multiple defining American film roles — particularly his 2005 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for Paul Haggis's Crash and his 1980s teen-film roles in The Outsiders (1983) and Rumble Fish (1983). He was born Matthew Raymond Dillon on February 18, 1964, in New Rochelle, New York. His father Paul Dillon was a sales manager and portrait painter, and his mother Mary Ellen was a homemaker. He is the brother of actor Kevin Dillon.

His breakthrough came at age 14 in 1979 — when casting director Vic Ramos discovered him in the cafeteria of Hommocks Middle School in Larchmont, New York, and cast him in Jonathan Kaplan's Over the Edge (1979). His 1980s American film career produced multiple Francis Ford Coppola-directed teen-film S. E. Hinton-novel adaptations — particularly Tex (1982), The Outsiders (1983, in which he played Dallas Winston), and Rumble Fish (1983, in which he played Rusty James).

His subsequent late-1980s and 1990s American film career produced multiple defining American films — particularly Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy (1989, in which he played heroin-addicted drugstore robber Bob Hughes), Singles (1992), To Die For (1995, opposite Nicole Kidman), In and Out (1997), and Bobby and Peter Farrelly's There's Something About Mary (1998, in which he played Pat Healy).

His 2005 supporting role as racist Los Angeles Police Department officer John Ryan in Paul Haggis's Crash won him the 2005 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination, the 2006 BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The film won the 2006 Best Picture Academy Award. His 2002 directorial debut City of Ghosts launched his subsequent occasional directing work. He has been in a long-term relationship with Italian actress Roberta Mastromichele since 2017.

His name Matt is the English short form of Matthew (from the Hebrew Mattityahu meaning "gift of God"). Matt was a popular American boys' name through the late 20th century.
