Matt Stone
Screenwriter — born 1971
Matt Stone is an American actor, producer, animator, director, musician and songwriter.
Matt Stone is an American animator, voice actor, screenwriter, and producer whose three-decade career — primarily as the co-creator of Comedy Central's South Park (1997–present) with Trey Parker — has produced one of the defining bodies of work in 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s American adult-animation TV. He was born Matthew Richard Stone on May 26, 1971, in Houston, Texas, into a Jewish-American family. His father Gerald Stone was a Texas-area economist and his mother Sheila Lois Belasco was a homemaker. The family relocated to Littleton, Colorado, when Matt was a young child.
His education at the University of Colorado Boulder (B.A. in Mathematics and Film Studies, 1993) launched his 1992 first collaboration with Trey Parker — across their 1992 University of Colorado Boulder student-film collaboration The Spirit of Christmas and the subsequent 1995 viral-shareable VHS-tape underground-distribution of the December 1995 follow-up student-film The Spirit of Christmas: Jesus vs. Santa.
His August 13, 1997 first episode broadcast of Comedy Central's South Park — co-created with Trey Parker, and centered on four eight-year-old elementary-school students (Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick) in the fictional South Park, Colorado small town — launched his late-1990s and 2000s American adult-animation TV public profile. The series has continued for 26 seasons and 327 episodes across 1997–present (with multiple Paramount+ exclusive specials in the 2020s) — making it one of the longest-running American adult-animation TV series.
His 1999 theatrical-release feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut — released June 30, 1999, with songs co-written with Marc Shaiman — produced his 2000 Best Original Song Academy Award nomination for the song "Blame Canada." His 2011 Broadway musical The Book of Mormon (co-written with Trey Parker and Robert Lopez) — which won the 2011 Tony Award for Best Musical — launched his 2010s American Broadway-musical public profile. He has been with American actress Angela Howard since 2008, and the couple has two children.
His name Matt began as the diminutive of Matthew (from the Hebrew Mattityahu meaning "gift of God"). Matt was a popular American boys' name through the late 20th century.
