Mike Ditka

Coach — born 1939

Mike Ditka is a former American football NFL player coach and TV commentator.

Mike Ditka is an American Hall of Fame former NFL player and head coach whose three-decade career produced one Super Bowl championship as a head coach (Super Bowl XX in 1986 with the Chicago Bears) and his 1988 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player. He was born Michael Keller Ditka on October 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, into a Polish-Ukrainian-American working-class family. His father Michael Ditka was a railroad welder, and his mother Charlotte Ditka was a homemaker. The Carnegie-area western Pennsylvania steel-and-railroad family environment shaped his later biographical narrative.

His college football career at the University of Pittsburgh across 1958–1960 under coach John Michelosen produced his 1960 first-team All-America tight end honors. His 1961 first-round NFL Draft fifth-overall selection by the Chicago Bears launched his 1961–1972 12-year NFL playing career.

His 1961 NFL career launch under Chicago Bears head coach George Halas — across which he played tight end (one of the first NFL tight ends to be employed as a primary receiving target) — produced his 1961 NFL Rookie of the Year Award and the foundational role of the modern NFL tight-end position. His subsequent five NFL Pro Bowl selections (1962–1966) produced his 1960s NFL playing public profile.

His January 19, 1982 hiring as the head coach of the Chicago Bears by Bears owner George Halas — at age 42 — launched his 1980s and 1990s NFL head-coaching public profile. The 1985 Chicago Bears regular-season 15–1 record and the subsequent January 26, 1986 Super Bowl XX victory over the New England Patriots (46–10 — the most lopsided Super Bowl victory at the time) produced his 1980s NFL head-coaching public profile.

The 1985 Chicago Bears defense (under defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan's 46-defense scheme), the November 4, 1985 "Super Bowl Shuffle" Bears music-video, and the December 1985 "Refrigerator" William Perry novelty-running-back appearances produced his 1985 American football pop-culture peak. He was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints across 1997–1999 and has subsequently produced multiple American TV-broadcasting analyst positions across the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. He has been with American homemaker Diana Trantham since 1977 (married 1977). He has four children.

His name Mike is the English short form of Michael (from the Hebrew Mikha'el meaning "who is like God?"). Mike has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names since 1880.
