Tim Curry
Movie Actor — born 1946
Tim Curry is an actor and musician whose works have covered various media like theatre, television and films.
Tim Curry is an English actor and singer whose five-decade career has produced multiple defining American film and TV roles — particularly his 1973 stage and 1975 film role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Jim Sharman's The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He was born Timothy James Curry on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England, into a working-class English Methodist family. His father James Curry was a Methodist minister-and-Royal Navy chaplain who died of complications from a 1958 illness when Tim was 12, and his mother Patricia Curry was a school secretary.
His education at Hillcrest Grammar School in Birmingham (1958–1965) and the University of Birmingham (B.A. in English and Drama, 1968) launched his early-career path. His 1968 first English theatrical debut and his subsequent late-1960s English fringe-theater career launched his early-career English theatrical public profile.
His June 19, 1973 stage debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show — at the Royal Court Theatre in London — launched his English-and-American stage-and-film public profile. His subsequent 1975 reprisal of the Dr. Frank-N-Furter role in Jim Sharman's The Rocky Horror Picture Show (the film adaptation, alongside Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) produced his American cult-film public profile. The 1975 film has been continuously in midnight-movie limited theatrical release since April 1, 1976 — the longest continuous theatrical-release run in American film history.
His subsequent feature-film career has produced multiple defining American films — particularly his 1990 lead role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the ABC TV miniseries It (Stephen King's 1986 novel adaptation), his 1990 lead role as Wadsworth the butler in Jonathan Lynn's Clue (the Hasbro board-game adaptation, alongside Madeline Kahn and Lesley Ann Warren), Disney's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992, in which he played Plaza Hotel concierge Mr. Hector), his 1996 voice role as the Long John Silver-derived villain Long John Silver in Disney's Muppet Treasure Island, and his subsequent multiple American voice-acting roles. His July 2012 stroke limited his subsequent acting career, although he has continued to do voice-acting work. He has not married.
His name Tim is the English short form of Timothy (from the Greek Timotheos meaning "honoring God"). Tim was a popular American boys' name through the mid-to-late 20th century.
