Tim Duncan

Basketball Player — born 1976

Tim Duncan is a basketball player who is regarded as one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history.

Tim Duncan is an American Hall of Fame former professional basketball player whose 19-year NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs (1997–2016) produced five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014), two NBA Most Valuable Player Awards (2002, 2003), and his 2020 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was born Timothy Theodore Duncan on April 25, 1976, in Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands. His father William Duncan was a U.S. Virgin Islands-area mason, and his mother Ione Duncan was a midwife.

His childhood ambition was Olympic-level competitive swimming (in which he competed as a regional U.S. Virgin Islands champion across the 200-meter freestyle event), although the September 17, 1989 Hurricane Hugo destruction of the U.S. Virgin Islands' only Olympic-size training pool — and the April 1990 sudden death of his mother from breast cancer one day before his 14th birthday — produced his pivot to basketball.

His college basketball career at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina across 1993–1997 under coach Dave Odom produced his 1997 Wooden Award and his 1997 Naismith College Player of the Year Award. His 1997 NBA Draft first-overall selection by the San Antonio Spurs launched his 19-year Spurs tenure under head coach Gregg Popovich.

His 1997–1998 NBA rookie season produced his 1998 NBA Rookie of the Year Award. His 1999 first NBA championship — alongside David Robinson — and his subsequent four NBA championships across 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014 produced one of the longest sustained NBA-team championship dynasties of the early 21st century. His 15 NBA All-Star Game selections (1998, 2000–2011, 2013, 2015) and his 15 All-NBA Team selections (1998–2010, 2013, 2015) produced his late-1990s, 2000s, and 2010s NBA public profile. He retired from the NBA on July 11, 2016, at age 40. He has been with American homemaker Vanessa Macias since 2017, and the couple has two children.

His name Tim is the English short form of Timothy (from the Greek Timotheos meaning "honoring God"). Tim was a popular American boys' name through the mid-to-late 20th century.
