Chris Froome

Cyclist — born 1985

Chris Froome is a Kenyan-British professional road racing cyclist and winner of the 2013 Tour de France.

Chris Froome is a British professional road cyclist who has won the Tour de France four times and become the first rider since Bernard Hinault in 1983 to hold all three Grand Tour titles at the same time.

Christopher Clive Froome was born on May 20, 1985, in Nairobi, Kenya, the youngest of three sons of British parents Clive and Jane Froome. His father worked in the leisure industry, and Chris grew up riding mountain bikes in the hills around Nairobi under the guidance of Kenyan rider David Kinjah.

He attended boarding school in South Africa, studied economics at the University of Johannesburg, and rode for the Konica Minolta team before joining the South African UCI Continental squad Barloworld in 2008, the year he competed in his first Tour de France.

Froome joined Team Sky in 2010 and finished second at the 2011 Vuelta a España, later upgraded to first after a doping disqualification. He won the Tour de France in 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017, the Vuelta a España in 2017, and the Giro d'Italia in 2018. A serious crash at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné caused major injuries, and he later moved to the Israel-Premier Tech team.

Their name Chris derives from the Greek name Christophoros, meaning bearer of Christ. Chris is widely used as a short form of Christopher in English-speaking countries.
