Chris Morris

Chris Morris is a British radio personality, television anchor, director & satirist.

Christopher Morris is an English satirist, writer, and director whose television and radio work redefined the boundaries of British broadcast comedy from the late 1980s onwards. Born in Colchester in 1962 to two doctors and educated at Stonyhurst College and the University of Bristol, he read zoology before drifting into hospital and student radio.

After producing irreverent shows on BBC Radio Bristol, GLR, and Radio 4, where his news parodies sometimes triggered serious management panic, he co-created the 1991 BBC Radio 4 satire On the Hour with Armando Iannucci, Steve Coogan, and others. Its 1994 television transfer, The Day Today, anticipated and skewered the visual grammar of rolling news that has dominated television since.

The 1997 Channel 4 series Brass Eye took the form further with elaborate hoaxes that lured politicians and celebrities into denouncing fictional issues. Its 2001 "Paedogeddon" special generated thousands of complaints and a tabloid storm but is now widely regarded as a milestone of British satire. He went on to co-write Nathan Barley in 2005 and to write and direct two feature films, Four Lions in 2010, a comedy about inept British jihadists, and The Day Shall Come in 2019.

Famously private, Morris rarely gives interviews and lives in London with his family. His influence runs through later work by Iannucci, Charlie Brooker, and the writers of Veep and The Thick of It.

The given name Chris, a short form of Christopher, comes from the Greek Christophoros, joining Christos meaning "anointed" and pherein "to bear," thus "Christ-bearer." An old name of saints and Anglo-Saxon kings, it carries him through edits suites and concealed cameras into the front rank of British satirists.
