Steve Chen
Entrepreneur — born 1978
Steve Chen was the famous American internet entrepreneur and technocrat, a co-founder of the popular video-blogging site ‘YouTube’.
Steve Chen is a Taiwanese-American computer engineer and businessman whose two-decade career produced his February 14, 2005 co-founding of YouTube (with Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim) — making him one of the foundational figures of mid-2000s American Internet-video industry. He was born Steve Shih Chen on August 18, 1978, in Taipei, Taiwan, into a Taiwanese-American emigrant family. His father was a Taiwanese-immigrant businessman, and his mother was a homemaker. The 1986 family emigration to Prospect Heights, Illinois (when Steve was eight) launched his early-career path.
His education at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (1992–1996) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1996–2002; without earning a degree, after he left to join PayPal) launched his early-career path. His 2000 hiring as a PayPal early-career engineer — across the 2000 PayPal-Confinity merger and the 2002 PayPal initial public offering and subsequent acquisition by eBay — produced his early-career American Internet-payments-industry public profile.
His February 14, 2005 co-founding of YouTube with fellow PayPal alumni Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim — at a Menlo Park, California pizzeria-and-Japanese-restaurant dinner conversation that produced the YouTube concept — launched his mid-2000s American Internet-video-industry public profile. The April 23, 2005 first YouTube video upload ("Me at the zoo," Karim's 18-second video at the San Diego Zoo) and the subsequent rapid 2005–2006 YouTube user-traffic growth produced the foundational documents of mid-2000s American Internet-video industry.
His October 9, 2006 acquisition of YouTube by Google for $1.65 billion in Google stock — at which point YouTube had approximately 67 employees — produced his mid-2000s American Internet-video-industry public profile. His subsequent post-acquisition tenure at YouTube as the chief technology officer continued through 2008. His 2009 founding of the AVOS Systems mobile-app-development company (with Chad Hurley) and his subsequent 2014 venture-capital advisor career across multiple Silicon Valley startups produced his later American technology-investor public profile. He has been with Taiwanese-American homemaker Park Ji-hyun since 2009, and the couple has two children.
His name Steve is the English short form of Stephen (from the Greek Stephanos meaning "crown"). Steve has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names since 1880.
