Steve Perry

Rock Singer — born 1949

Steve Perry is best known as the lead vocalist of famous American rock band ‘Journey’.

Steve Perry is an American singer and songwriter whose four-decade music career — primarily as the lead singer of American rock band Journey across 1977–1987 and 1995–1998 — produced one of the foundational bodies of work in late-1970s and 1980s American arena-rock music — particularly his lead-vocal performances on Journey's 1981 single "Don't Stop Believin'" and 1983 single "Faithfully." He was born Stephen Ray Perry on January 22, 1949, in Hanford, California, into a Portuguese-American family. His father Raymond Perry was a Portuguese-American radio-station owner, and his mother Mary Quaresma was a Portuguese-American homemaker.

His college and early-adulthood musical career across the late-1960s and 1970s — across multiple regional California rock-and-soul bands — preceded his late-1977 audition for the San Francisco Bay Area rock band Journey. His October 1977 hiring as Journey's third lead singer (replacing the group's previous co-lead vocalists Gregg Rolie and George Tickner) launched his 1977–1987 10-year Journey lead-vocal career.

His 1978 first Journey album Infinity — released January 1978 by Columbia Records — sold over three million American copies and produced the singles "Lights" and "Wheel in the Sky." His 1981 seventh Journey album Escape — released July 1981 by Columbia Records — sold over nine million American copies and produced the singles "Who's Crying Now," "Open Arms," and his "Don't Stop Believin'."

The October 19, 1981 "Don't Stop Believin'" single — co-written by Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain, and Neal Schon — has been continuously cited as one of the foundational documents of 1980s American arena-rock music. The 2007 final-episode appearance of HBO's The Sopranos (which featured the song over the final scene) and the 2009 first-season debut of Fox's Glee (which featured the show's pilot performance of the song) produced the late-2000s commercial revival of the 1981 single — making it one of the most-downloaded songs in American iTunes-store-and-streaming history. He has been with American homemaker Sherrie Swafford (1980s) and American homemaker Kellie Nash (2010s, until her December 2012 cancer-related death). He has not married.

His name Steve is the English short form of Stephen (from the Greek Stephanos meaning "crown"). Steve has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names since 1880.
