Steve Nash

Basketball Player — born 1974

Steve Nash is a Canadian retired professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association.

Steve Nash is a Canadian Hall of Fame former professional basketball player whose 18-year NBA career produced two NBA Most Valuable Player Awards (2005, 2006) and his 2018 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame — making him one of only 13 players ever to win two consecutive NBA MVP Awards. He was born Stephen John Nash on February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa, into a South African-born English-Welsh emigrant family. His father John Nash was an English professional footballer for the South African Vasco da Gama soccer club, and his mother Jean Nash was a Welsh-emigrant homemaker. The Nash family's 1975 emigration to Saskatchewan, Canada (when Steve was 18 months old) launched his early-career path in Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

His college basketball career at Santa Clara University (Santa Clara, California) under coach Dick Davey across 1992–1996 produced his three West Coast Conference Player of the Year Awards (1994, 1995, 1996). His 1996 NBA Draft 15th-overall selection by the Phoenix Suns launched his career.

His 1998 transfer to the Dallas Mavericks under coach Don Nelson and his subsequent 1998–2004 Dallas Mavericks career produced his three NBA All-Star Game selections (2002, 2003, 2004). His 2004 transfer back to the Phoenix Suns under coach Mike D'Antoni — and his subsequent 2004–2012 second Phoenix Suns tenure — launched his mid-2000s NBA public profile.

His 2004–2005 first NBA MVP Award — at age 31 — produced his 2000s NBA point-guard public profile. His subsequent 2005–2006 second NBA MVP Award (back-to-back, becoming one of only 13 players ever to win two consecutive NBA MVP Awards) produced his mid-2000s Phoenix Suns Seven Seconds or Less offensive era public profile. His subsequent 2012 Los Angeles Lakers two-year tenure was complicated by his ongoing back-and-leg injuries. He retired from professional basketball on March 21, 2015, at age 41. He has been continuously single across his career, although he has three children with his former girlfriend Alejandra Amarilla.

His name Steve is the English short form of Stephen (from the Greek Stephanos meaning "crown"). Steve has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names since 1880.
